Time Fished: 100pm - 400pm
Weather Conditions: Overcast with occasional rain, Air Temp about 59 degrees
Water Conditions: Off Color, Very High, Visibility was about 5 feet, water temp was 48 degrees
Insects: Quill Gordon spinners, sz 18 mayfly, sz 16 Caddis, sz 14 stonefly. Insects began to appear at 215pm and stopped about 345pm. Small mayfly was first, then the Quill Gordon, followed by Caddis and finally the stonefly. They mixed and mingled at times.
Tionesta Creek was being stocked today so I drove past 2 stocking trucks about 7 miles apart on my way to the South Branch. They had lots of help.
This whole area has had a tremendous amount of rain over a couple weeks and the South Branch was still way over its normal flow. I started with a big stonefly nymph since it has worked before at this time of year and in these conditions. I worked down through a nice stretch 3 times. I added an extra split shot each time I started over. Not a strike.
Finally I switched to a new streamer I tied a few nights ago and I had 5 strikes. I stuck 2 fish but both got off with a head shake. What I learned was, the trout were hugging my side of the stream. When casting the nymphs earlier I was working seams in the deeper water. After the strikes I tried a couple different streamers but never had another strike. As I left for home I didn’t see any other vehicles parked along the creek.
I’ve included a photo of the stream and of a Quill Gordon (measured, profile, underbelly).
