Slippery Rock Creek, Lawrence County 6/12/11

I went up to the FFO section of SRC this morning. The water has cleared up a bit since last weekend but the grass is still abundant. I arrived a little later than planned (8:30 ish) and hit the water during a small caddis hatch. I saw a few fish rising here and there but nothing major. I did manage to catch one rainbow on a nymph and a smallie on a bugger and the fish went away. fished for a couple of more hours without seeing anything until some showers passed through. Saw quite a few risers during the showers but when the rain left they stopped.

After I packed it up from that spot I got in the car headed up stream a good bit and it was a completely different story. Both trout and smallies were launching themselves out of the water up to 4 or 5 times in quick succession. No flies were coming off that I could see but bait fish were scrambling everywhere. However, the grass was thick here and became a nuisance quickly.

Thanks for the report. I've been debating on whether to go up there Thurs or chase smallies on the Yough. SRC can be a tough stream.

Imo, no contest, go to the Yough. Water levels are good and I've heard the smallie bite is on, plus you have a much better chance of tying into a real pig.

After visiting my mom in Cranberry, I actually fished SRC on Friday night and was disappointed. Though I caught a few, they were dinks.

With as many trout as they put into SRC, you would think they would be itchin' to hit anything you've got!

greenghost - how far is the Yough from Cranberry Twp? I'm on vacation next week a would like to take a day trip to a new stream/creek.

Depends on what part of it you go to
I can make it to Ohiopyle in 1.5 hours from my north hills home.
And add another 20 minutes to get to Confluence

Hugh, if you're looking for trout, the section from the dam tailrace down past Confluence to Ohiopyle is what you want, like DFG stated. If you're looking for smallies, you don't hafta go as far. Smithton, Layton, Dawson, Connelsville areas have warmwater fishing.
