Slippery Rock Creek, Lawrence County, 08/03/2010

Nice to see that others are enjoying the smallies as well. My girlfriend and I have been doing well on the same stretch of water since the last week of July! The hatch has been strong since then. Actually the first week of august was the best so far. It was like a damn snow storm! We've been using size 8 white deer hair poppers/sliders. Oddly enough I haven't run into anyone else on the river anywhere all summer, and I'm out at least 3 times a week; crazy! Have fun everyone.
 
crick, what are you driving? I always check the vehicles parked near the creek to see if I know anyone. I notice a white subaru alot, with florida plates.
 
Yes fellas I am the Florida phantom of SRC! I do drive the white Subaru Outback. It's usually myself (Ryan) my girlfriend Sarah and my Stafford shire "Diesel Trucker" I relocated back to the area this past April after 8 years in FL. We don't know too many folks that chuck flies around here so if ya see us come say hello. We also frequent. By the way last night was awesome!!! We caught'em till we quite around 11pm. The moon was beautiful.
 
You honked your horn at me one night a few weeks back. I was parked by Rt. 19, black Ford Escape.

ha ha, the phantom has been found!! crick, I live half a mile north of the rt 19 bridge, I've seen your car a bunch of times while leaving for work! where abouts do you reside now?
 
Nice job Guys!

Nothing like fishing a good hatch, with some of your friends. Always fun standing around after your done fishing, talking and having some beverages of your choice.

Speaking of SRC, I'll be over that way next Friday. Do you guys have any luck with streamers during the day this time of year? I went by the creek for the 1st time yesterday while scouting Hell Run. SRC is a nice looking piece of water. It was so late by the time I got over there I did not have much time to cast the creek any.

I hit lake aurthur for an hour and SRC for 2 hours yday morn/ afternoon. They were hitting in the shade. Got a nice bucket in the lake, but sun got bright quickly. More shade and fish on SRC. Mostly used poppers, but took one smallie on a big streamer. they're there, for sure. Good luck...let us know how you do.

Thanks, my plan is the big streamer route. I'll hit the shaded areas. Hopefully blasting a big streamer around all of those big boulders in SRC will get some moving.
 
So; has anybody been doin any good with the smallies lately? Is it me or does it seem as though the bite is a little better on a waning moon cycle? I did well today for the first time in a couple of weeks. Does anyone have a little insight as to how the weather/temps affect these guys this time of year?
 
Smallies normally hit more the hotter it gets. They have to eat to keep up with their metabolism. On streams with low oxyegon rates though like the Susquehanna it really put them in a funk. The cooler temperatures has really turned them on around here. Another outstanding day yesterday. The water temps have now been in their best comfort zone 68 - 74. SRC sounds like a great smallmouth stream. These fish are going to start eating good from here on out. They are getting ready to start moving towards their fall and winter haunts. I can tell a few fish have moved in to an area that was weak all summer but is truly outstanding in the fall.
 
With the rustbelt chrome getting all of the attention has anybody been out on SRC lately or know how the smallies act this time of year? I've been out of town for work a lot lately, and archery season as well.
 
by now the smallies are probably hunkered down low. I've fished it before this time of year(it's 1/2 mile from home) and it seems like there isn't a fish in the stream, maybe a lone holdover trout here and there.
the neshannock usually offers a better option IMHO.
 
I agree with bikerfish. Neshannock looks great by the way. My friend and I went up yesterday for a short visit. We didn't catch anything, but the water color and depth were pretty good.
