I’ve thought about targeting musky. Any insight where to hunt for them in the “Slimy Pebble” ?! Lol

Without giving away speciifc locations... look in deeper, larger pools. Especially with cover like logs, dams, stone walls, etc. Lower part of the stream generally from McConnells Mills down to mouth. But I've seen a few above that too.

Thx for the info and someday I will perhaps be lucky enough to catch one. Of course I probably should just stay focused on catching at least one damn fish!!! I’ve been skunked the last 3 times I’ve been out. I’m the worlds worst fly fisherman.

Hard to believe this was 12 years ago on Aug 3rd. Like the redbuds on the little J, the Renaissance Festival at Coopers Lake is a sign the flys will start hatching soon. With in three days of the last Turkey Leg eaten it will happen 🙂

Pennsic War is usually a couple weeks after the first bugs start showing. Beginning of August is the beginning of white flies. Easy peasy.

Yes - both trout and bass eat them.

I have not fished SRC but generally you will find muskies in deeper areas with slower current, especially in creeks. They are not (generally) shallow water fish. Feeder creeks, weedy areas, and woody debris are likely spots.

Has anyone been on the “Rock” this week? Just curious if there if there is anything hatching? ie “white flies” . This will be my first attempt at trying to fish this hatch. Just a quick question? So during a hatch are fish constantly feeding? Just curious because I’ve never experienced something like this. Also I’m a bit un sure as to how to time this up as well as how to even fish in the dark…? I don’t have a lot of flies so not sure what to use for a white fly? Anyway thanks to all who have replied to my various questions over the past few months. I’ve truly have caught the fly fishing bug!

Be standing where you want to stand an hour and a half before official sunset. I’d have a small white bluegill popper on. Maybe size 10’ish. Bigger works too. There shouldn’t be anyone else there so fish down through the hole. You’ll catch some. If the white flies start up…..watch up / down creek for the biggest splashes. I would gravitate toward that fish. Might as well be in the game for a big one.

If you don’t have any poppers maybe try a coffin fly or another larger white fly. Stay as long as you feel comfortable. Rises will continue after dark. Leave when you aren’t having fun anymore.

Have a light to tie on flies and bug spray. If a beaver comes by and slaps his tail, don’t be alarmed, he shouldn’t be back.

So I witnessed the white fly hatch Friday evening! It was exactly as you guys described. Right around dusk there was a blizzard on the creek! It was quite a sight! Unfortunately it stormed so hard about an hour before the bugs came up that the water turned to chocolate milk… So I didn’t get to experience the fishing during this phenomenon.

I read in a compilation of fishing stories a phrase about "fat men making graceful dancers" to describe how big-fish takes can be subtle. It was a great book - Fishing With Father - had several authors including McClane, Hemingway's son, the (female) sword fish boat captain from "The Perfect Storm" movie, and several others. (Maybe this reply belongs on another thread - didn't intend to hijack anything.)
