Didn't catch anything. Water clear, and between 35 and 37 degrees. Fished between Skunk Run and Hell Run. Used mostly stonefly nymphs, pheasant tail nymphs, woolly buggers and eggs

I'm no expert, but the water temp may have been a bit cold. I generally don't fish unless its in the 40s. Just my 2 cents.

Agreed. Too cold.

Also, the number of trout in there may be very very low. Unless it gets a fall stocking. I didn't check on that, but the PFBC website has the info.

That stream gets very warm in the summer. The number of stockies that survives the summer is probably low.

It's a good smallmouth stream, though. Try it for trout in the spring, smallies in the summer and fall.

I can't say if there are any trout in subject creek since I'm not familiar with it but it definitely wasn't too cold to catch a trout. I've caught lots of fish with water temp's in the 30's. Low and slow or offer a big meal!

I fished Hell Run on Saturday and didn't catch anything. I saw maybe 2 fish. I kind of knew going in the fish wouldn't be very active but it was good to get out. It's awesome back there.

We are just beginners at fly fishing for trout so I am sure that had something to do with us not catching fish. It was beautiful there. On that note you can't catch anything if you don't go out. 😉

SR did not get a fall stocking this year, and probably won't any time soon.

That said, this past summer was great for holdovers. Neshannock has a bunch of stockies left from last spring and I'm sure SR has a few as well, since I believe it's cooler(in some areas) overall and definitely more oxygenated.

Thanks for adding your post. Sometimes the only thing tougher than getting skunked as a beginner is when you have been at for a few decades. Glad you enjoyed the day and keep at it.

If you take a moment to consider the names of the feeders...Skunk Run And Hell Run...you should have "run" to a different stream...just stating what seems obvious

Generally you're fishing a very productive stretch but I don't frequent it much after mid summer.. As streamer said it was a good year for good overs but I'm sure the population for trout is still quite low. Check the pfbc site.. The FFO section gets stocked around march and offers some pretty solid fishing before opening day. If you've got an itch to scratch check out Neshannock!
