Slippery Rock Creek, 7/25/15

Was at the Special Reg area this morning. Quite a few people fishing in the fly stretch and above Heinz Camp. Water was 68 degrees and running clear , saw a few Tricos but no fish activity. Due to the number of anglers I only fished a small area for about an hour and I never had a bump. Only the second time this year I was shutout in 30 tries. True to its name the wading was a challenge. I saw the guy below me disappear up to his hat before he regained his footing and shook off like a dog.

I was up there Thursday evening looking for smalljaws and found a few eager to eat off the bottom. Beautiful stream for a skunking though.

I absolutely never have luck on this stream. Bit of a downer because of the beautiful setting. 3/4 of the time I go up there in the spring it is completely blown out and the few times it is fishable I never have a bump. Kind of baffles me.

It can be a finicky, esp. In the FFO section. It's very close to my house so it's one of my home waters, but it took me a while for it to consistently fish well for me. Defintely took some time to learn. I've never done well there after mid to late June, but has a great caddis population during early spring. Heavy caddis pupa and emergers can take a lot of fish. Ive found i need to use shot and beadheads for the most success given how strong the flows can be in the spring. It really heats up quick. There's a USGS gauge for it about 5 miles downstream from the FFO. Ive found it reliably fishes well below 700 cfs in the spring.. just wade carefully! Its a little more difficult to time in summer as it stays clouded up considerably longer as a decent bump in levels.
Haven't fished it but also has a great white fly hatch that should be on right about now. Supposedly some great smallmouth fishing throughout late in the evenings.

Any advice on fishing the FFO area this Friday during mid day.

I am going to Elwood City for work on Friday and have a couple of free hours in the middle of the day and was thinking about trying out the FFO section.

My guess it that it will be tough to impossible to catch anything in the middle of the day but I would rather spend the time on the water than in a cubicle.

Not a regular there. Fished a few times but probably to warm for trout. Could fish for smallmouth.
