Cloudy damp day.
Water in the low 60's.
Water level low and clear.

I didnt even spook a fish much less catch one or miss a few.

fished tandem nymphs: caddis/stonefly...haresear/bwo emerger-nothing!

fished tandem dry flys: tan caddis w/ bwo stonefly w/ caddis- nothing!

always pretty area good for the soul....

i am a little disheartened though, my last three trips i have been skunked(and i have not even seen a fish!!!!)... i am no pro by any means... but i have been fishing slate and cedar for 20 some years and almost always manage to fool a few fish...

Not even seeing fish the last 3 trips is puzzling! Today in my couple hours, i covered over a mile and a half of stream! i didnt spook/ see a single fish!

Please someone tell me there are fish there!!!

I have had the same experience the last 2 years I have fished Slate and Cedar. I fish them once a year in May. I didn't catch or spook anything either. I was hoping it was just from my poor fishing.

Maybe you're thermometer is off, I was up that way over the w/e and the water was in the forties, but I was north of Slate. Brookies are ready to spawn if they aren't spawning now. In talking to Tom at the tackle shop the "Runs" didn't fish well until later in June. None of the streams I fished early in the season up there fished at all well. In fact they were pretty bad. Too cold.

Is that area getting hit with water removal and return from Frac drilling for gas? In Southwest pa we had a major fish kill in a great smallmouth fishery...hmmm...coincided with a ton of new wells being drilled...you tell me?

Slate Run is an exceptional value stream with extremely high Visibility, and according the SRTS there was good fishing there the week before I was up. As I said I didn't fish Slate Run when I was up, but fishing was off due to the change in weather. Temperatures dropped in both the water and air, and low pressure was over the region. This weather puts fish down, coupled witht the pre-spawning activity fishing is quiet. If someone has been fishing in front of you then the fish would be down anyway. These are all factors to consider when fishing Slate and Cedar Runs. I have fished both streams before and after a passing front and fishing changes dramatically after such a change.
There are no water withdrawals and no dumping of fract water.

I tried to post a picture of a brown I caught on slate last year, but couldn't get it and it is on another computer. Either way, I fished it twice in 08 and did well, catching a few fish each outing including the fish I got the picture of, around 20 inches. I did not make it down this year, I had hoped to get down today, but I have sick family and the weather sucks up here, wind, wind, wind!

I wish you had the pic, those kind of fish from Slate are certainly possible but rare. One time while fishing it i enticed a brown out from a deep hole that was easily 20 inches. Just when i noticed him and was sure id get him to take, it started raining. That normally wouldnt stop me but it was a massive down pour w/ lightning and the car was @ least 1 hour away. I never saw a fish like that again in Slate.

One day ill see him again 🙂

I will try to post it again next week, just could not figure out how to and was in a hurry. I have the theory of we will meet again going right now with a fish up the road from my house, he chased a fly two weeks ago, but would not commit. An absolute monster brown from a beaver dam.

Fished Slate last year, had a tough time spotting any. My brother saved the day with this 17" brown.
