Slate Run, Tioga/Lycoming County, 10/7/11

I was on a family trip to Hills Creek State Park this weekend, and was able to sneak out for a few hours Friday morning to fish Slate. Got to the stream around 7:30. Fished the lower end early for an hour, then moved farther up and fished for another 3 hours or so. Air temp started around 38 and ended around 50. Didn't take a water temp. The stream was really ripping from the recent rains, but still clear. A lot of broken water, too, which helped in sneaking up on the best spots. Fish seemed to be spread out around the stream. Managed 3 browns, and spooked a good many. Saw a few tiny cream-colored mayflies coming off (not sure what they were). Saw one huge brown surface feeding at the head of a big glassy pool with a truck sized piece of slate tucked against the bank. Tried tossing a hopper at him (didn't have anything close to the little flies coming off), and he quickly retreated to under the ledge. Wonderful day on the water, though, and great scenery to boot (and no snakes!).

That second brown would leave me completely satisfied after a day on a beautiful stream like that.

That is one of my favorite streams~being from Delaware I couldn't believe ice in the guides in May.WOW

The first time I fished it I had NO clue what I was doing. Love that stream now. Worst part is walking out though!

Camped and fished there exactly one week prior. When I was there it was almost unfishable. Didn't matter had a good time with great friends, that's about all you can ask for.

Indeed...a gem of a stream. That report really makes me want to explore it. Maybe next spring sometime.

In the past I have most often fished Slate in the Spring. My results were not consistent. I had some great days and some days where I came home with the smell of skunk. Now that I have started fishing nymphs, I want to go back again. I have never been lucky enough to fish Slate in the fall.
