Slate Run 3 27 09

First time on this creek since learning about it ten years ago. Outside temp of low 60's, water temp just above 40. Could not by a rise on this stream. Fished a 1.5 mile section that ended about a 1/4 mile below Manor Hole. Minor insect activity in the air, but lots of mayflies on the rocks.

Went further upstream to Francis Branch and caught 5 on BWO dries. I can't imagine how well both streams will fish once the water temp moves up. Hope the pictures load ok.

Slate's a really fun stream - glad to hear you did well. When the water's low the pools are almost impossible to fish, and even riffles require 30' casts! The picture of the Luna moth in my avatar was taken while camping just above the CCC camp flats on Slate. Rain rain rain rain rain!

What types of flies did you see?

Fond memories of Slate run-
I had fished Penn's,the Paradise and around Carlisle but being from Delaware this was my first exotic high country stream that I had ever fished.
So clear-hard to believe and ice in the guides[daybreak] in early June-no way but yes.At 22 it doesn't take much to excite you.
Then I saw a dead rattler that someone had killed and left on the gravel shore either as a joke or warning-another first.
Got up to one of the big pools with multitudes of rising trout-
spooky and very disinterested but I was a bull headed kid determined to beat the system and become know as ``the worlds greatest trout fisherman'' as first Bergman,then Brooks and various were referred to.
Few problems there-I wasn't that good,couldn't write and had no money
but I did finally catch a few 10-12 inchers on 28 grey letort ants.
Never made it back to Slate but one of my fondest fishing memories
and got me headed into trout bumdom-not a bad way to waste a life-lol

They appeared to be BWO's. They were all over the rocks in the water. The combination of their abundance and the clear water made their visibility an unusual occurence. I had the stream to myself for the entire time.

I thought I saw a dark gray caddis earlier in the afternoon, but cannot confirm. On Francis Branch, the natives took the BWO parachute, with the one exception being the BWO nymph.

I made the trek from Scotland PA. I am close to the Falling Springs, but I must admit I do not care for the small limestones down here.

I was laid off recently. The irony is now I have time to fish, but not the resources. I will try to fish this again once the water warms up.

BWO, mainly nymphs. A few were in the air, but nothing that I would consider a hatch. I tried a black stonefly pattern in multiple holes, but no luck.
