Time Fished: 6:00 – 11:00 AM
Weather: Mostly Sunny, 80s
Water: Mid 70s, Slightly Stained
Flies Used: Dragonfly, Crystal Bugger, Sculpin, Bunny Clouser
Fished what has become my favorite smallie creek in the past few years. Got on the stream early, and there was fast action from the start. I had been on Shermans a few weeks ago, and they were going nuts for the dragon/damselflies that were flying just above the surface. There were risers/jumpers all over the place. I figured I’d come prepared this time, and tied up some blue dragonflies for the morning. They weren’t on the naturals like they were last time, but they didn’t hesitate to pound a well-placed fly.
It is amazing the diversity in this creek. I caught quite a few species in just a few hours. The smallies were dominant though, as expected. Landed mostly fish in the 8-14 inch range, with a couple pushing 18-19. Saw some monsters, but spooked them before I could cast.
Highlight of the morning was standing on a rock in the middle of the stream and landing 15 smallies out of one hole on a crystal bugger. Didn’t take more than one step in 20 minutes. It was insane!
Spent the rest of the day rock-hopping with spinning gear on the River. Landed quite a few there, but unfortunately saw a lot of YOY either floating or with skin spots and looking quite distressed. There were a lot of healthy ones though too, so hopefully they will have a good year.
