Shenango River, Mercer County 9/8/12

Fished the upper shenango right below pymatuning lake in jamestown for a couple of hours after the rains let up today (around 2 till 5). As before when I fished this spot it was mostly crappies and bluegills. Not a bad time. First few fish were caught with a pheasant tail nymph. I then switched it up to a bigger sized olive woolly bugger beadhead hoping to hook some bass however I kept hooking bluegills and crappies, just bigger sized lol

Nice. The bass on that section are tough. If you fish the slower water you'll have a chance at a largemouth(usually small), and there's smallies in the faster water right below the lowhead dam. Not a lot, but they're there. The better smallie fishing is farther down, especially below Shenango Lake.

Did you notice a lot of shad at all? When I was there on Mon there were tons of shad below the dam. I've never seen that before there.

no streamer guy I didnt see any...then again the water was pretty murky from the earlier rain....any jumping I saw I casted into but it was just bluegills and crappy...I'll keep my eye out for them if I go again though cause that would be a great catch

Fished the Shenango again today in between some football (3-5:30). Fished right in Greenville right by the main st bridge. This is a great fishing spot that I only just discovered the other day. Its right behind the adams hotel in which I got to talk to the owner who said I can fish there whenever I want. As the photo shows its a nice length of bank and is mowed which makes it extra nice. As for the fishing, great bites along the banks, mostly shorthead redhorses I believe but not 100% on that...6 catches in all...started with an olive woolly bugger beadhead then switched to a black after some usage.

I'm a bit of a nerd when it comes to fish ID's, I enjoy catching pretty much anything.

Here's what I think.....

Fish 1: River chub

Fish 2: river chub(possibly hornyhead chub?)

Fish 3: striped shiner

Fish 4: river chub

I have never caught any of them in the Shenango before. I did catch a creek chub once in a backwater area though. There are a lot of redhorses of different varieties in the river also, some pretty big ones too.

If it makes you feel better, I target junk fish myself. There's a stream back home in MD that has trophy sized fallfish. Seriously! Some have been in 18+ range. Now I'll only go there for a hour or so, but man those bastards fight! 😀

Hey midgeman I totally agree with you...the chubs I got were small but they were little fighters thats for sure
