Shenango River, Mercer County 8/25/12

Fished the Shenango River today. Started at around 9am till 2 with a break for lunch then back at it around 4:00 till 6. Nothing big as seen by the photos just sunnys and crappies. First was caught with a olive woolly bugger beadhead, the rest were caught with an elk hair caddis. The caddis worked extremely well with a couple of my catches being only minutes apart. Total for the day was 14 catches.

Nice report. Were you on the upper river by any chance, like around Jamestown? That section has always been good to me with lots of little gills and crappie.

Went to same spot today 8/26 from around 1:30 to 4:30. Not many bites today and only 5 catches. Again just crappies and sunnys hence no new pictures but still a good time.

It's alright, you didn't have to add the specifics in the original post, I was just curious. I usually fish the river below Shenango Lake, and catch pretty much everything there from smallies to trout to big hybrids. There seems to be less panfish in that section but the bluegills are usually much bigger and fight harder.

I only fished the section in Jamestown once this year, and actually caught 2 smallies there that day which is rare for me. I have only caught one other smallmouth there before, but have gotten a few largemouths. I always have fun fishing that river.

I fished Sat. below the dam, water was pretty low with one gate open. Caught a few gill and a few small smallies. Then I saw a few large carp finning across the river and threw them a green weenie. OMG I hooked into a huge carp that kept me busy for about 20 minutes. I gave the rod to my Dad so I could net him but it was too big for the net! It finally broke the line. WOW what a wold ride.
I was using my 4 wt 8' talk about trying to stop a freight train.

lazlo, below the Shenango dam in Sharpsville? I started fly fishing for carp this year in the very shallow water right below the dam. What a blast. The ones in the extremely shallow water with their backs out of the water would litterally swim a couple feet to eat my buggers. Had luck with eggs too.

I fished the river up in Jamestown for a little bit heading home from fishing French yesterday. Caught a bunch of gills, some crappie, 2 little largemouths, and my first ever white bass from there(get them all the time though below Shenango dam). The green weenie was the magic fly for everything but the white bass.
