Shenango River, Mercer County, 5/21/13

Made a run out to the Shenango Tuesday evening. Started stripping streamers and caught 2 trout, 2 bass, and a crappie pretty easily. I noticed a handful of fish rising somewhat consistently so I went back to the vehicle and got out my dry fly rod. Ended up catching about 5 more trout on a sz14 tan caddis and missed a few more. I regards to dry fly fishing on this river, this year has been my best. I fished it 3 times in the past two weeks or so and had rising fish each time. I've seen many great caddis hatches there in past years but just never seemed to do all that well on top. But then again for trout I mainly fished it earlier in the season and then start hitting it hard for bass in June. My timing might have just been off in the past. Anyways, I had a good evening on the water!

nice Nick, after reading this report and talking to you at Cool Spring, I def have to hit up shenango below the dam to try my luck on the dry fly action. Maybe this weekend

Starting about +/-2 weeks or so ago(maybe before?) they were really keyed in on the caddis and then as of Tuesday they still were. I heard last week during the week was good. There's quite a bit of trout still left in there for the amount that get kept.

If all else fails fish streamers(for trout and bass). Like I said this is my first good year with dries on the Shenango. Sz 14 tan EHC is all that's been hatching and catching. Good luck!

Very nice mix there. That Brown colored up pretty well if that was a 2013 edition.

Haha. they'll die off within the next month or so, then it's all natives!

Most of the browns I've gotten there(well, pretty much every else too) this year have been pretty colored up. I notice the PFBC is stocking better fish every year.
