This report probably won't be of much use to most of you, but here goes.

Left philly at about 6:40 AM in friday. Picked Ian up and got on the road at about 7:15. Turnpike was closed, so we got detoured. We eventually arrived at the entrance to the park around 12:30 or 1. Ian's brother in law was waiting for us, so we packed the truck right away. In a real treat, we got our licenses from a drunken meth addict. The wonders of the Appalachian south never cease to amaze me. After a few beers, we headed down the trail to fish our first stream. Fished nymphs, adams, and a few other bugs pretty hard on the small mountain creeks with no luck. Eventually, the green weenie emerged as the go to fly. Ended up with a few brookies each.

Day 2:
Got a good breakfast and hit one of my more favorite streams by late morning. This day, the green weenie and the HUMPINATOR were king. Many beautiful fish were brought to hand that day. As we hiked out, it got cold and rainy. We decided to make a makeshift tarp station at the truck so we could grill burgers and have a cold one. It got downright frigid, but we soldiered ahead through it.

As we got to the bottom of the mountain, we were still hungry, so we decided to hit a steakhouse. For some reason there was a benihana hibachi place in the middle of podunk, virginia. We got a show that included old favorites such as the onion volcano. As we ate and drank sopporos, a barbershop quartet sang to us. No lie.

After the drunk waitress gave up on convincing us to go to west virginia to play slots, we went back to our room to tie flies. This is when the parachute green weenie was born. I decided I needed a secret fly, so I'll not share any pictures or recipes. 😛. Just picture a green weenie with some grizzly parachute hackle. I guarantee it'll catch fish.

Day 3:

Snow on the ground. It was frigging cold. We headed to another small stream to see what we could accomplish. More beautiful fish were brought to hand in some of the tightest, most challenging small stream fishing I've ever done.

Made it home by 1am.

Pics to come sometime. No more digital camera for me, so I have to get them developed and ported to the computer.

Always nice to get away for a fishing trip. Sounds like fun despite the poor weather. You inspired me to invent a few new flies as well. I introduce to you,

The comparaweenie, the loopweenie,
the no hackle weenie, the partridge & weenie and the royal weenie.

Jack,

That's about what it looks like, just a parachute version. 🙂

I didn't mean to insinuate the weather was poor. It was stunning for the first two days, until the rain fell on the hike out. The third day was windy and cold but the skies were blue and the sun was warm.

I brought him back some of this:

some of you guys are just not right.........and that is what makes you cool..........

great story.........
great "create a weenie" layout

I am still laughing............

Jay,

I think this would have been the real killer fly on day 2...

There are enough patterns to suggest a Weenie swap. Oh wait that doesn't sound good! :-D

BTW Jay did you fish the east side or the west side of the ridge? I've backpacked down there a lot but never fished it. Am considering getting down there next spring.

joe,

I fished both sides. We drove in skyline drive and pulled off at various trailheads.
