Smelly trout hole mentioned he could bring his tractor and assuming he can lift it I wonder if it will fit in a standard pick up truck bed?

I'm up for a clean up and think we should set a time and date. Perhaps a weekend day would be best if that works for others. I can be fairly flexible with my schedule at this point.

Cleanup and reporting violators are not a either/or proposition. They are a both/and proposition. If no one reported the dumping of the container and ultimately tried to track down who did it, it likely would pickup some friends and neighbors as well. If the perp can ultimately be tracked down, perhaps a fine will serve as a deterrent to dumping in the future. The problem will never be solved, because there will always be those that view any ground that is not their own as a legitimate dumping ground. But perhaps it can be curbed, even if by only 5%.

From a practical standpoint, does someone have a place to dispose of all the trash legitimately? What if the tote still has herbicide residue in it? You can't just that curbside and hope the trash man takes it.. Should we find another stream to dump it all in?

If you are just bagging trash i would presume each volunteer could absorb a bag of trash at home...for larger items you will likely need to go to a landfill to dump.

I would recommend calling your local landfill and speak to the GM about your environmental clean up. They typically have budgeted community service dollars and may be able to cover your ost of dumping. It may go over better if you can have a conservation org or other non profit sponsor the clean up. Its something they like to share in their newsletters and local papers to improve their juju.

Just a suggestion guys...we organize a lot of our clean-ups through the Great PA Clean-up. If you sign up through this program, there are free clean-up materials from PennDOT and usually free landfill space if you deliver it to a local landfill.

i'm with salmonid - i think you have to try to report it.

someone probably paid a lot to have that tarmac legally dumped - how many businesses are there in the local area that use tarmac ?

it may have even been the Town paying for its removal ?

Thanks for the insight. I just assumed we'd all take the trash home, but didn't think about the larger items. I'd like to seriously do this. Let's make it happen.

I suggest contacting the township office first. They could (should) pick up at the site or at least let you drop it off somewhere. Next try the county.
if you expand the scope to remove trash from the road side you could convince pennDot to haul it away.
PennDot hauls all the trash from the LJRA cleanup for free. The items have to be collected at a roadside location that accessible to their large trucks. There are a few other requirements such as tires need to be separated. They can provide instructions.
This could evolve into a yearly event

if not present, it might be worth having no dumping, under penalty of law signs. Won't stop everyone but it might send a message someone is watching

Since most of Segloch is on SGL, are there any hurdles there? Do we have to notify the PGC? There might be issues with putting up signs in the SGL without permission.

On the privately owned stretches we would likely need to knock on doors as well.

Awful. Upstream of the bridge right? I don't fish that half as much. At lower flows is the main channel on the right or left side of that island?

If we ever find out who did it I say we "chub" their mailbox. Segloch and its neighbors have plenty we can use.

I cannot answer any of the questions. The pic was taken by a friend and put on his Facebook page. I'm guessing under normal flows that it's not in the creek.

We gotta get this thing out and the sooner the better.

So now its a pollution incident. Someone should call the DEP and report it. Truing to remove it could present its own responsibilities should it rupture.
