Schuylkill River, Philadelphia Co. 8/17/2014

Went walking around boathouse row around 3pm looking for some carp to cast to with my 8wt. Could not find one in the still waters between the falls and boathouse row. Decided to walk up the wall towards Girard Ave. bridge on Kelly drive. Saw a bunch of large cat fish cruising along the the walls in the grass/weeds in the water. Popped on my sinking tip leader with some tippet and stated casting a black zonker strip streamer with red barrel eyes. Two casts in and a nice 24" catfish sucked up my streamer. Found it pretty funny catching one on the fly but better than being skunked. Was just a nice day to be out close to the water.

cam - WTG - cats are really strong fighters. Watch out so you don't get spiked when you handle one.

He actually did not put up as much fight as I thought he would. I guess on the 8wt it can handle that size easily. Was sweet the get him on my new Allen Kraken as well.

Good stuff! I was there two nights ago and didn't see a thing. May need to bring a rod next time I walk down there.

if you want carp in the city try bellow the falls on west river drive or the canal. I think the canal is your best bet for sight fishing. not huge fish but there are a lot. bellow the falls ive seen fish push 30 pounds easy. I would image it would be hard to carp fish cause water is fast in most spots.

Its been my conclusion (at least the waters that I fish) that most carp will feed in the am through the summer and by noon forget it. You may find some feeding but usually the early am is where I have my best shot at fish that are actively feeding. They move around a lot so go back to those spots in the early am and you may find a bunch mudding..

Or, try the National Park, NJ shoreline across from the mouth of the Schuylkill and upstream from Woodbury Creek, NJ. Not only are the carp abundant, but there are many fancy-finned mirror carp among them.

Was it possibly a flathead catfish.
