Fished the Schuylkill River and tail end of Perkiomen Creek in the late afternoon until dark with Fredrick and Jayl, and met Mute on the stream. The water on the Skuke was moderately off-color from the recent rain, and a little high for wading. No temperature reading was taken but the water felt cool.

I arrived first, and fished the Skuke for two hours without a strike. When Jay and Fred arrived, we walked to the mouth of the Perkiomen and found “clearer” water there. Jay and I donned waders and Fred wet waded. Fred took a position 100 feet downstream of the effluent discharge pipe from the Oaks sewage treatment plant :-o. He fished the “’foam :-o” line and was rewarded with a 10” SMB. A well earned trophy for Fred!

We caught our breath again , and worked our way up the Perk without moving a fish. Towards dark we approached the dam and found Mute and some buddies fishing the pool just below the dam. As we approached, we saw one of Mutes buddies had a fish on. They had one good carp in the pen and the second fish caught was also a nice one. (Pics of these fish can be found in the "Carp near Philly" thread)

Jay and I watched as Fred cast for carp and flatties. Both of us left as darkness fell, and Fred stayed in hopes of landing one of those behemoth fish. It was not to be that night for Fred. He headed home to hit the showers (hopefully :-(). Ah...the life of a brownliner.

Good report Afish. Fred hooked into something late that night before we all left but lost it.

Mute,

It looks like you guys have that fishing down to a science. Catching them on flies, while not easy, is possible. I'm really sorry that Fred's fish came unbuttoned. He's obsessed with catching a big carp, but especially a flattie on a fly. I'm sure someday his dream will come true. At least you showed him where. It's up to him to close the deal.

To complete the dream outing, I went and got skunked dunking livers until 1:30 on my favorite little berks county lake.

Afish, i remember him catching a big carp down under the bypass on the fly last year. As for a flattie, that would definately be cool. There were actually some carp that were rising like the one in that japanese carp video that was posted a few days ago. It wasnt all that consistent though.

I'd tie some pellet flies and take a bag of dog food. If you can get 'em to rise, it could be a blast. Might have to give it a shot down in the flats by the bridge.

What the hell, it's brownlining!

Sounds like you guys had a mini Jam..nice!

that section, before the dam was taken out, used to be the best sm fishing in the area. I remember fishing it from boat - pretty scary considering what it looks like now. last year, i head up the skuke from the point and did OK (not great) up to the check dam up stream. theres a trail on the Oaks side that makes getting from spot to spot a little quicker and you can park at the philly expo center. I haven't fish this section yet this year. Next time you guys get together, I'd like to join you.

on a side note, I fished the D on friday for smallies and only got one little guy. hearing from a few hardware guys, sm fishing hasn't been great anywhere. Tonight I plan to get some big bait and chicken livers and fish for flatties and channels in the royfo area and tomorrow hit the Unami to see how the smallies fishing is there.

Skilit, where exactly in the rofo area? I might be able to join up if you wouldnt mind. Im assuming youre fishing the skuke? Lock60 phoenixville is supposed to be real good.

Pellet fly, size 16 hook, dark olive thread, peacock herl. Wrap a bit of lead or non lead wire on the hook. tie it down and wrap the thread over a couple of times, starting at the tail wrap the peacock herl over the weight and tie it off. Works really well for stocked fish or if you are getting skunked on the LL.
