Fished the tailwater with my brother on Saturday. Flow was 57 cfs, which is low even for August and August has the years lowest flows typically. The water temp was around 59 F, which is probably about as warm as this tailwater ever gets.

We didn't do much with caddis or hoppers early, but we started picking up some fish when we switched to Green Weenies subsurface. I tried dropping a second nymph like a pheasant tail or a copper john off the weenie, but I never caught any on the dropper. Towards evening I caught a few with attractor dries. We caught wild brookies in the 8-9 inch range and wild browns from 9 to 15 inches.

The water and surroundings were beautiful, and there were plenty of fish. The wading was trecherous. My brother fell down twice. While I didn't go down, I sure had to catch myself a few times. The bottom is mostly boulders and cobble, and its all coated in green algea. I wish I had brought a wading staff.

Here is a shot of a nice wild brookie, my brother with a brown, and one of the nicer wild browns.

Man do I miss fishing that river !!!! One of the coolest moments from this river goes like this: fish rising, but you have like a 2 foot window to get your fly noticed......I cast my BWO size 20 behind a nice boulder.....I see a huge boulder move (big fishy)
.....I start to tense up as I see a 20 some inch brown trout aiming upward at my fly........he is right at it.........and wham........the fly line caught the middle current and pulled the fly at an extreme rate of speed downstream..........hung my head on that one........

I have caught some beautiful browns and brooks from this river.....it is simply one of the most beautiful rivers I have ever fished.......where the Savage dumps into the Potomac is some really awesome water........big water......big fish........
