Savage River, Garrett County, MD, 6/10/12

I was asked to post a report on how the Savage fished yesterday so here it is. It was my first time fishing the river, the flows seemed great (no idea about the cfs), and the fishing was good. I ended up bringing seven to hand, with the largest being about a 15-16 inch brown. The browns in this river are some of the most colorful I have ever seen, and it was a joy to catch them - they fought hard as well.

I got on the water about 10:30am and just threw on a caddis with a PT soft hackle dropper. I hooked up with a nice fat brown right away on the PT, and all throughout the day I had strikes both on the caddis and nymph. My hook setting for whatever reason was about as bad as it was when I first started fishing and I must have missed 10 or so fish.

Later in the day we started seeing some sulphers so i threw on a sulpher nymph and hooked up with that nice brown. Saw a couple risers but the fish weren't too interested, and the hatch never really got going so we packed it up and headed home.

Overall it was a fine day on the water, especially for my first time there. I really wish I had ventured down there sooner in my days. As is, it may be the only time I fish it before I move to Colorado in July.

Nice report bmi...the Savage certainly has a special place in my heart, it may not be the best trout river in our area, but it is certainly my favorite. The caddis/ PT dropper combo is killer on that stream, and with the clear water, the strikes on the caddis can be breath taking. Many argue the point, but I think Savage River Brown trout are the most beautiful wild browns I've ever caught. I'm glad you had a nice day out there.

I fished the Savage in on 6/2 and 6/4 earlier this month.

On 6/2 we started in the afternoon and the fish were already coming up for sulphurs. Fishing sulphurs in the middle of the day was a treat, not used to the bright sun actually improving the fishing...but it is understandable with how cold the water is.

On 6/4 we just popped in the morning on our way home. Not too many risers, but they were hammering nymphs (mainly used PTs). I could see how a dry/dropper rig would work well, it was difficult to fish deep in the pockets with all the crap on the rocks.

I'm still waiting for my buddy to send the pics...I think I caught my biggest wild brookie, at least weight wise...

Nice report! I was there the 13th and had a great day. Landed brooks browns (prettiest I've ever seen) and bows. Almost all fish came up for para adams and a few on sulphurs.
