Savage River, Garrett County, MD 4/28

Hatches: Midges, BWO, stoneflies, blue quills and black caddis

Time: 8:30 am-7 PM

I got out for the first time in 2019, it's probably been 20 years since my first trip was this late in the year. We started the day nymphing up some fish, mostly taking midges. There were clouds of midges in the air but nothing happening on top. Around 1:30 a steady hatch of blue quills with some bwo started to come off. If you found soft water you would find some risers. At 200 there are a few of these spots but not too many. The hatch went strong for a few hours before it died down and we were back to nymphing. Took a few more at the end of the day tight lining a streamer.

Nice! Looks like a fun day. Great you had some rising fish. The Delaware is unwadeable in all but the calmest sections. I have no desire to float when the WB is 2500 cfs and the main pushing 6000 cfs.

Mushumatt, there are some solid fish in there. One of my buddies got one 24", a pig, I will try to find the pic. I picked up a decent one not too long ago but the big fish in there are tough. Definitely broken off many more of the big ones than landed, just so many places to break off, brutal.

Ryan- oh ya! I have a few beats that are very productive. One of my friends caught a brook that looked like it came out of the rapid river, hunchback and everything. A few weeks ago I got a 24-26” brown about 200 yards down from the picture of the brown jumping.

Great report Ryan. I was there on Saturday and it was brutal in the morning with all the wind but still managed to pick up a couple of browns nymphing with a little streamer action in the evening. Lots of insect activity but did not see any fish rising in the different sections I fished.

How crowded was it on Sunday? I was surprised at the amount of people on the river by 10am on Saturday figured the winds might keep more people off the water.

Wish I could, this weekend is slammed with kids stuff. Hit me up another time though, my schedule gets better around mid June.

10rman, I only saw four other guys. I don't know if it was the sections I was fishing but it wasn't crowded for me. Whenever there is a whitewater release on the branch it sends more traffic to the Savage so I was kind of suprised by the lack of people.

There where 1-2 cars at almost every pull off heading down to the second suspension bridge last Saturday. If weather and flows are good we will be out on the savage.
