Time fished: Sunrise until 01:00 pm
Weather:
Thick cloud cover with very humid conditions. The temperatures were in the low 70s rising up to about 80 degrees around noon.
Water:
Slight stain and the flows were at 57 cfs. It was a little lower than what I prefer on the Savage, but overall I had comfortable wading conditions. I did not get a stream temp.
Hatches:
Steady BWO hatch all morning in about a size 24. Midges were coming off as well. There was a small caddis around with a dark brown wing in a size 18, and I saw a few flying ants around mid day.
Tactics:
Dry dropper with large stimulator and soft hackle below. The stimulator produced a couple really nice brook trout in the 9 inch range along with a several small browns. The soft hackle accounted for the larger brown trout. I also had several streamer chases, but I could not connect.
Results:
It had been a while since my last Savage River trip. I took about a dozen working the pocket water in the middle section. I set up on a large hole and head hunted, but there was very little rising. I took one 10 inch brown in that big hole and only saw a couple other risers, but nothing consistent. I switched over to a streamer before I left and had a follow by about an 18 inch brown, I pulled the fly right out of the fishes mouth as it swiped. The best fish of the day was the first one, a beautifully colored brown of about 15 inches. The river was very busy when I left, but I was very pleased with the day. I found myself sitting and enjoying the setting a good bit. I love western MD in the fall!!!
