I took a trip out to the Savage River yesterday for some wild trout fishing. I arrived at about 0700 am to cool 68 degree air temps and upper 50 degree water temps. I started in the trophy trout section about .5 miles downstream from the fly shop and I immediately notice swarms of midges on the water. There were also sparse caddis coming off in about a size 16. The water was low around 60 CFS and it was breezy outside, so I started prospecting with terrestrials and a dropper nymph.
I ended up fishing a stimulator with a beadhead caddis pupa for the better part of the day and I took most of my fish on the stimulator. The fish were in the obvious holding lies, but the biggest fish of the day (a chunky 14 inch brown) was sitting in about 6inches of water in a little trickle of a run. I only photographed the native brookies and I caught several over the 10 inch mark.
