Savage River, Garrett County, 4/22

Flows:300 cfs
Water temps: 48 degrees
Air temps: low 50s
Hatches: Blue quills, heavy from 12-2, some bwo and black caddis.

The flows finally got low enough to open up some areas the river, not ideal but doable. I was able to get out and take home 2 rainbows for dinner, the browns just got in the way ;-) . There was some great dry fly action fishing blue quills in the slower water until about 3. After that I switched over to nymphing a pheasant tail and continued to pick up fish. Hopefully the river continues to drop down.

Pretty much, we've been hiking there some daysto get some exercise and you don't really run into anyone.

Did you see any DNR? Word was they were making people leave the Savage 2 weekends ago. At the time the word was you can't even fish areas where you could catch something you'd have to put back, aka a brown below the slot limit. I heard second hand that guys were told returning a fish was currently illegal in MD.

I drove past one of the local lakes by my father's house on Saturday and there must have been 8-10 bass boats on the water in just the section I saw. I'd be willing to bet a healthy amount of money they weren't fishing for food. Curious if the DNR was hanging around the boat ramp

Sorry just saw this. If this is true it is utterly ridiculous. Virtually every stream and lake has fish with some sort of size limit to it. You're telling me they are kicking the walleye fisherman off DCL because they might hook a sub legal bass.. I've read their website and it says nothing of the sort, it even refers to still abiding by size and season restrictions. I did not see a game warden on the Savage but I did speak to one on the MD yough in c and r area. He was very nice and I did ask him about the savage and he said that would be fine. This was a while ago though, the day after the governor's order. Doesnt matter now the flows are never going to come down out here, it's crazy!

Yeah it seemed ridiculous and I wasn’t sure what to believe and I think initially it was much stricter and they relaxed their interpretation from when I heard they were making people leave the Savage. Thankfully all fishing and boating MD is back tomorrow and I can finally get my drift boat out.

Honestly I love fishing the lower 125-200, 250+ I love even more. Get all those fair weather fisherman off the river. Glad to see it fishing well.
