Savage River, Garrett County 10/15/17

Spent a few hours fishing the Savage on Sunday from 1-4. The water temps were in the mid 60s and it was a beautiful day with highs in the upper 70s. The flows were right around 55, normal for this time of year. There were some BWO's popping off and I even found a pod of rising fish at the tail of pool. I passed on the risers as I was high sticking a black bugger with a small midge behind it. I didn't have alot of time to be switching rigs because the wife and kids were waiting on me at home. I stuck to the pocket water and picked up a couple browns and a bow on the bugger. I have hardly been out fishing the last two months and my control over the drifts were not what they should be. Good thing they love wolly buggers even on a drift that's dragging.

I find that if I know I have to get home to the wife and daughter that it is similar to fishing right before it gets too dark to dry fly fish. I'm in such a big hurry that I fish like a bum.

I fished yesterday, 10/22/2017, with very similar conditions to my last trip. Unusually warm weather with low water conditions. Prior to the sun clearing the ridge, the activity was very slow. I had a couple small trout hit my dry and a fish or two move on the dropper. Once the sun came up, the river came to life. A strong BWO hatch size 20, a moderate brown caddis size 18-20, midges and some terrestrials.

I did not move any large trout, but it was a steady pick of 7-11 inchers. As the water warmed, the volume of rising trout slowly rose. Before I left, a slow approach with an X caddis to a nice run was producing a rise about 80% of the time.

I did throw streamers a bit, with a few followers but no takers.
