Savage River, Garrett Co. MD, 8/15/19

Hit the lower savage, fished from 6am-11:30am.
Flows:65cfs
Temp:63
Clarity:slightly off color


Fish started rising later in the day, landed 8 nice browns and a nice bow on nymphs. Lost a few others due to bad rod angle. Water was off color which seems odd, even at 1400 cfs during a rain storm the lower never got this discolored. We where able to get into some larger browns earlier in the morning.

Flows are really low, but still very fishable. If your trying to get into top water action, terrestrials are the ticket later in the day.

The murky water seems to happen at the end of the summer some years as the reservoir gets lower. In past summers I've done well dead drifting streamers when this happens. I'm headed out there tomorrow, will have to check it out.

I was guessing it had to do with low water levels in the reservoir. Whenever savage has any discoloration I go to larger flies. But when you fish it 4-6 days a week... it’s just an easy stream to fish to keep the rust off till we can head south to get into the big boys.

No big fish in WV Antonucci, all the big fish are caught in northern PA by Dusty Rhodes, don’t be telling these guys fibs.

Savage was either on fire for me last week in the lower part of the river, but fished like crap by the campground. It was very milky.

Glad to see everyone getting out to the savage and catching some fish. Heading out that way at the end of sept which unfortunately looks like they will have a whitewater release during the weekend stay.

Anyone have an idea on how quickly they raise/lower the flows for the whitewater release? We were thinking of hitting the north branch that saturday and hopefully the savage sunday if they drop the flows by then.

Hey Bart... I just said south, I meant Tennessee/NC, you going to come down and experience the GLORY this fall?


But 10- flows go straight up to the stated release, then they shut the gates down right at the stated times. It’s a beautiful place to be on right after they drop the flows, but fishing is very hard and off usually till the next day.
