While not a PA stream, I'm sure this is a favorite of many FFers in southwestern PA. I have not been out to western MD in a few years but have been reminded today why it's always worth a visit. The tree colors were spectacular and the roads have little traffic. I spent about 3 hrs in the upper, fly fishing only section of the Savage. Water temp was 62 deg F and clear with a good flow. I saw only a few surface feeders in one of the few flat pools and had some luck on a small beetle - there appeared to be some very sparse BWOs emerging but I couldn't confirm this. Most of this section of stream is high gradient pocket water ideal for nymphing and I got about a dozen fish - all wild browns up to about 14 inches. If you have never fished western MD it's worth a trip - beautiful area.
