Date and Time Fished: 10/05/2014 from 0700am-0100pm
Weather Conditions: It was a cool fall morning. The temps started around 45 degrees and rose to the mid 60s, with an on and off stiff breeze, and a mixture of sun and clouds.
Stream Conditions: Low and turbid... the flow was around 40 cfs, but the Savage River Reservoir was turning over, so the water was stained with about a foot and a half visibility. Great conditions for approaching fish with a nymph rig.
Hatches: Olives 20-22s and midges 24s along with a small dark caddis around a size 18. The fish seemed to be keyed in on the olives.
Tactics: Mostly high stick nymphing with a bright point fly and a bwo nymph. The bigger browns were all over the bwo nymph, and the brookies were hitting the point fly. I also tossed to some risers in the early afternoon and had some success on a size 20 bwo parachute and a cdc midge.
Results: It was a good day of fishing. The conditions were nice with the turbid water, and the fish were in a feeding mood. I took a good number of wild browns in the 12-15 inch range along with your standard 8-10 inchers and good sized native brookies. The river got busy as the day progressed, but everyone was spread out enjoying their own piece of heaven!!!
