I finally made another trip out to the Savage River this year. It has been really tough taking long trips, with the new baby, so I relished this opportunity. Of course, I slept in, and I did not arrive until 0830 am, which was about two hours later than planned. The water was flowing good, I'd guess in the 50cfs range, and it was clear. I fished until 1230 pm, and I noticed midges, summer blue quills, small tan caddis and various terrestrials in the trees and on the banks.
I stuck with my proven Elk Hair Caddis with a nymph dropper rig, which immediately produced a healthy 14 inch brown on the peaking caddis dropper. I had to work pretty hard, but I managed 8 fish over the course of the morning, and fishing really slowed down once the sun hit the water, along with the crowds. It got really warm out, with temps hitting the lower 90s by noon. I did not get a stream temp, but the water was plenty cold. Overall a great trip, all the fish with the exception of a nice 15 inch rainbow, were wild browns. On a side note, I did not observe any dydimo on the stream, although I diseffected my gear with water and bleach solution. I was fishing below the fly shop, and I did hear reports of the Dydimo problem being present closer to the dam.
