After a recent successful trip to the Savage, I was compelled to head back out there for some more action. The water was very low, running at about 50 CFS, and the air temperature was about 54 degrees on the stream this morning. I did not get a stream temperature, but I could tell that it was at a good level for the trout. I was pleased to see a lot of mayflies early on in the morning with blue quills and BWOs being the most prevelent. I also noticed a lot of caddis and midges on the water.

I had some tough fishing to start. I only had a couple fish respond to my Griffith's gnats and caddis immitations in the first hole, but I could not seem to contect. Finally, I stuck a nice brown at the head of the pool that I was fishing, but it parted the tippet almost immediately.

I started working upstream, a little discouraged, but happy to be in such a nice place. I noticed some splashy rises in the pocket water as I worked upstream and I switched to a small Elk Hair Caddis pattern. This proved to be the ticket, as I took about ten wild browns in a matter of an hour and a half. The biggest was about 14 inches and gave me three nice jumps.

As the sun started getting high, I came to a pool and observed the browns lazily slurping midges, so I decided to switch to a Griffith's gnat, which I recently learned to tie. Almost immediately, I stuck a nice brown that had some interesting coloration (see pic) and a pretty native brookie.

In all it was another great day on the Savage. If anyone is thinking of heading over there, be careful on Savage River Road. The local logging trucks are using that as a detour around the weigh station and it is creating a dangerous situation. I've almost be pushed off the road on a couple of occasions going through there. Good luck and tight lines.

Nice job. Particularly the way your photos show the difference in hues between the truly blue halos found around the spots on brook trout and the merely "blue-ish" marks found in the cheek region of a brown trout.

Sweet looking fish

Not sure whether I like the Brookie or the rings in the water below it better. Just more cool pics. Thanks for sharing. Pudgy little brown too.
