Weather/Stream Conditions:
It was hot outside, approximately 90 degrees, with a slight breeze and little humidity. The Lower Savage was running at about 50cfs, and it was in the lower 60 degree temperature range. I fished from 3pm until dark.
Bugs:
Small summer blue quill (size 20-22)were bringing up the smaller fish almost immediately after I arrived. There was the ever present midge hatch (Size 24), plenty of ants/beetles crawling around, and some smaller sparse caddis. The caddis were brown (Size 16), Tan (Size 14) and Black (size 18). Towards dark, I saw a couple stray sulphers and yellow sallies and also some Iso's.
Tactics:
I mostly fished a dry dropper rig, with a Elk Hair Caddis above a size 24 olive midge dropper. I also short line nymphed a few areas with good results, fishing a haresear nymph above a mercury bead pheasant tail.
Results:
It was slow, as can be expected with the time period that I fished. I had to really work the current seems multiple times, before the fish would come up. I took some beautiful native brook trout and hold over rainbows in the heavy pocket water. I had a half hour at dark, where the fish started to rise consistently and I took two nice browns and two brookies. I was a cutthroat away from the slam, but I am not complaining, because I was able to spend a day on one of my favorite streams.
