Savage River, Garrett Co. MD, 03/31/2009

I made the trip out to western Maryland today in hopes to fish over some wild browns that have not been getting hammer lately. The weather conditions were very nice with 60 degree temperatures and clear skies. I was a little breezy from time to time, but that helped to push the tiny black stoneflies in the water. The Savage was flowing pretty strong, but it was clear as usual.
Other than the stoneflies, there was a few midges and sparse Olives. I think that the strong flows affected the hatches. I high sticked a tandem nymph rig with a bhpt for the point and a BWO nymph as the dropper and managed about ten browns and two brookies. All fish were holding in the slack water directly behind the larger bolders and I got to witness about fifty percent of the strikes. I did locate one large hole with fish rising and I took two browns on a size 14 black stonefly. I missed a few more, but I wasn't too upset. In all, I was a great day in a beautiful setting.
On my last trip, the fly shop owner out there told me that the Savage is about 2 weeks behind the State College Streams when it comes to hatches, so the olives should really come on strong when they drop the flows. As a side note, I took a trip up to the reservoir and it looked up from all the recent rain. If anyone is interested in a camping trip out there soon, shoot me a PM. Keep the reels screamin.

Nice. The Savage is a wonderful stream. Nice to see yuh had some luck with brookies. I always hope to catch one of the big wild brookies in this stream but I only seem to be able to catch browns out of there.

Nice report thanks. Real nice looking browns there. Ya know, I fish @ barnum 2-3 times per year, each year as I drive over the Savage, I say " Im gonna fish that on Sunday" and I never have.
Going to make a point to stop this year. Thanks again for posting my morning fish that goes well with coffee.

I just got back from a camping trip on the Savage and did about the same. I stuck with my drys and brought 11 to hand. I hammerd that P.H.D pool. Managed a nice 17" brown; all midges some bwo's..Didn't see many stone flys...Plan on returning in about a week or so...
