Stopped in at Savage River Outfiitters to say hello to my friend Charlie. Charlie indicated fishing was tough but to try using caddis flies, he sold me a few foam bodied tan caddis. Fishing was tough but i moved from pocket to pocket. i tossed mainly ants and beetles. i came across a pool where i saw some fish rising. i caught a small brown on the foam caddis. I missed several others and continued to fish. I tied on a stimulator and hooked a nice brown. i didnt see take just lifted the rod and fish was there. i continued to fish the run into the evening. Right before leaving I hooked a large brown that broke my 3x tippet. Bummed about the break off but overall a nice evening fishing the Savage.

The Savage is just hit so hard, fished the Branch and Savage Sunday, saw one human who was floating the Branch, saw at least 15-20 fishing the Savage. Those fish never get a break especially on holiday weekends. I can't fathom using 3x on the Savage - I don't know how you guys sleep at night fishing that heavy tippet. That first hole in your pic is a very fun run to fish, usually holds a lot of rainbows though from the Branch for some reason... How long was the brown you lost if you had to guess?

Can you explain what you mean by this?

Those fish are pressured so hard and that water is so low and clear you would have to have an unreal presentation to consistently catch fish in there on 3x... 6x is my minimum this time of year, and I used 7x for my brief trip Sunday. So if your catching fish on 3x on top at 55cfs this time of year - you can present a dry fly but I'm sticking with 7 lol.

what i mean to say was i had piece of 3x along with the end of 6x. I am not trying to embelish the story but the fish broke off the tippet all the way to where the 3x connected to the butt. I was not expecting a larger fish hitting the fly, so my drag was not loose. Now i know better

I was going to go to the C&R at the yough but they had white water releases. Not that familar with the beats on the NB so I didnt fish it

If any of your tippet touches the water on the savage while dry fly fishing, even 7x, it's tough. I don't think the fish are super spooky but getting a drift is very difficult no matter how thin the diameter.

Because of the low flows I was able to get some good drifts at the above pool. It was the only place I had success. I was using short casts to hit the pocket water as I made my way upstream to the pool. The rises were not very pronounced, the second fish pic I just lifted the rod tip at the end of the drift and the fish was on.
