Savage and North branch of the potomac, Garrett County, MD 8/27/16

Water temps: High 50s low 60s

I spent the morning fishing the Savage river, there were no hatches but fish were very willing to eat the hopper dropper rig I was throwing. Once the sun got up I switched over to nymphing as the fish seemed less willing to take the big terrestrials. After a break I met up with a buddy on the North Branch. We ran into another fisherman who also happens to be a paflyfish member, which is always pretty cool. I stuck with hopper dropper rig and it was an exciting evening of fish on top and underneath. Here are a few pics from the day.

Agree - some great fish pics and a motivating report.

The browns in the Savage often seem to have that rich, dark, chocolate and yellow coloration with deep red spots. Their flanks are a dizzying mixture of red, brown, yellow, green, purple, and gold. Altogether, it makes them appear quite dark. Browns like this have often vexed me at the easel as capturing such colors is really tough (at least for me).

That brookie is a real trophy.

Sheehan, it was nice to meet you. I guess it was a matter of time before I ran into you as much as we fish those two tailwaters.

Savage fished pretty slow for myself on the lower end with only a couple fish landed. Did see a thick Trico hatch in the am for those interested in fishing those.

Got it, sent you a pm back. By the middle of the day there were alot of people on the savage. There were more cars parked along the road than I've seen in a while. I was lucky to have a section for me and my buddy to fish were no one else was in the morning. I'm sure the water you fished had received alot of pressure before you got there.

Na, I just got my butt whooped. Happens sometimes. That is why the Branch is there, those rainbows are like shooting fish in a barrel, they let me save face a little bit Saturday. I've had my days with 20-30+ fish on the Savage then go through the same sections and not catch but one or two. Just how it goes up there.

This is my neck of the woods too for fishing. I am from north central PA, but moved to the Cumberland, MD area for work. I frequent the Savage and North Branch, so I am sure I might have passed you all at some point. I am actually heading to Barnum this evening.

Did a 17 mile kayak trip the other weekend on the North Branch to fish some areas that you can't get to on foot - tons of fun and some great trout/bass!
