If, like me, you're thinking about fishing this weekend - keep in mind that rifle deer season starts tomorrow (Saturday) morning and will continue on Sunday. This is new as opposed to the old Monday after Thanksgiving opener (we still close the schools on Monday around here).

I plan to wear some orange this weekend and avoid large tracts of forest. Note that the landowners of the Conewago Creek FFO do not allow public access during rifle season, at least the last time I checked.

Good luck to hunters tomorrow.

I'll probably wait till next week to fish anywhere someone may be hunting,I stay pretty close to roads shouldn't be a problem but will wear my orange

I’ve fished Black Friday the last number of years to hold me over til rifle was over. My wife had to work yesterday, and the kids daycare was closed, so Dad duty called. Still gonna wait til after rifle is over to wader up again though. I’ll live. Looks like we’re gonna be in a pretty good cold snap for the next 10 days or so anyway. Hopefully it’s warm on Sunday 12/14. 😉

Good luck to the hunters among us.

How many people have been shot walking their dogs in PA?

I didn’t take that post to necessarily mean PA. But, if it can happen elsewhere, it seems reasonable it could happen in PA.

Wear orange, walk your dog in places where hunting isn’t allowed, or at least, you’d be unlikely to run into a hunter. If you’re not hunting, I don’t really see a good reason to be in the woods during rifle season. Fishing, IMO isn’t a good enough reason either.

Walking your dog on public land (where hunting is allowed) during rifle is the rough equivalent of high holing a guy in FFing terms, IMO. It’s certainly legal (assuming you’re wearing the required orange), but not really a considerate or sporting thing to do. Plenty of options to get your dog out where hunting isn’t allowed.

Just wanted to share this photo from instagram a month or so ago, it appears we are required to wear orange if on State Game Lands!

Good post. I wear orange while fishing on public land from the opening of archery in Sept, to the end of late muzzleloader. It’s become second habit, I don’t even have to think about it. And it’s not a big deal. I still catch fish with it on.

A florescent orange hat and vest could save your life.
There have been a number of people shot walking their dogs along the road.
Because the dog hunters weren't wearing fluorescent orange or because someone is a slob hunter and isn't identifying their shots?
New York State:
Wisconsin:
"Every hunting accident in New York is preventable when people follow basic hunting safety rules,” said DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos. “I hope this tragedy serves as a reminder to hunters across the state to always be sure of their targets and beyond"

That doesn't seem to point to the dog walker not wearing orange, but rather a sloppy hunter. It doesn't change the fact that if you choose to fish during hunting season, do everything you can to make yourself more visible to hunters, who hopefully are doing more than just looking to shoot something that moves.
