Got to my favorite SoCal water today and it did not disappoint. Water was 54 when I got there around 10AM and around 59 when I left around 3PM. Normally this is a dry fly place but this morning the browns weren’t interested in dries, at least not right away.
I fished a few pools and then got to a real nice pool and nothing on the dry. I decided not to waste the good pool and put on a pink SJW. That was this mornings ticket. I got two fish on two casts into that pool, however I didn’t land either one. I moved up to the next pool and on the first cast got one. I thought okay, there’s my first 2013 Santa Ana Brown……………wrong. It was a stocked rainbow. I moved up to the next pool which had a cottage close by and thought I’d better cast from way back (water was low and clear and the fish here are very spooky). First cast and there goes my indicator. Brought to hand my first 2013 Santa Ana Brown. As I’m taking a picture here comes the husband and wife from the cottage and I’m thinking did I miss the posted signs. Turns out they had never seen fish in the river and wanted to see what I got. Had I great conversation with them and then moved on. I fished for another 45 minutes in this part of the river and took maybe another 10 or so wild browns on the way up. No more bows to be seen.
I then moved up to a spot I’ve been wanting to fish and don’t you know there are two guys getting geared up so I moved on to the next spot. There was a car parked there but I saw where the guy was fishing so I went upstream from, he was bait guy in a lawn chair so I dodn’t figure he’d be following me. I got just about to one of my favorite pools and darn, there a guy there with his 2 kids bait fishing. I politely say hi and walk further upstream where I had the place to myself at last. I cast the worm and immediately got stuck in the first bush right over a good run. I couldn’t pull it out so there went that pool. I decided I’d had enough SJW and put my dry back on. Right decision it was dry heaven for the next 3 hours or so. I almost got tired of catching fish and that has never happened to me. I did finish earlier than I would have liked because my back started to stiffen up on me from all the getting up and down to avoid spooking fish.
