Salter Brook trout

Hey all-

Wanted to see if anyone had any tips or tricks for chasing salter brook trout? Headed up north this upcoming weekend and I have some intel on some streams nearby where I am staying that may contain sea-run (salter) brook trout. Though it may be on the tail end of their inland stay.

While my trip will mostly be chasing stripers, I wanted to atleast bring a trout rod just in case.

Planned on focusing more so on streamer patterns for them as from what I have read they tend to eat more bait fish than insects.

There’s an episode of the new fly fisher where they are getting after some sea run Brookies somewhere in east Canada. Honestly looked like they were smallmouth fishing the Brookies were not shy.

The fish are NEVER shy; nor dinks, on 'New Fly Fisher'.

Yeah that's kind of the impression I have gotten from my research. While the area I am going to doesn't nearly have the same size of brookies as Canada, it seems like they are a little less discerning. The issue is more so finding them at the right time.

The fish are NEVER shy; nor dinks, on 'New Fly Fisher'.

They may be on the shows payroll 🤣

I casually went after salters a few when I lived in Maine! A few here and there but nothing crazy.

But you are spot on, bait oriented fish. Just use classic maine smelt patterns, could also consider small shrimp patterns if you are near tidal areas. They can be leader shy but they do need some weight to get down, so use a clear poly leader and a shorter tippet

Thank you for confirming! There are some resident brookies in the streams as well, I figured this weekends rain might make it worthwhile streamer fishing.

No dice on the salter brooks, I opted to chase stripers the whole time instead, which also resulted in no stripers. Tough weekend with the crap weather Saturday with lots of rain and wind. Sunday was better weather wise but all the striper I moved weren’t super committed to eat, broke off one. Today was bluebird sunny so the bite window was limited to the morning. Moved a couple on outgoing tide but they were non committal with the high sun.

Tough weekend for stripers from what I gathered from others. What hurts too is I whiffed on a good striper somewhere between 30-36”. Had the follow but couldn’t seal the deal.

Interestingly enough I managed to catch a bunch of salter brown trout. Apparently Mass stocks some brownies up there with the intent of making a trout fishery. I believe some hold over and get quite large. What’s absolutely insane is how these trout feed. So the tides up there on the bay side shift 8’. So incoming and outgoing tide pushes lots of water and stirs up the bait pretty good. The brown trout chase the bait the same way the striper do and blow up on the bait. Crazy fun fishing when the waters moving. I was targeting the couple striper in the pool with 2/0 clousers and too my surprise I caught a couple upper teens brownies.

Though this trip wasn’t a full on fishing trip, it was nice to get out in the mornings and a little in the afternoons to chase striper as it’s something I’ve dabbled in but haven’t gone all in yet… There is always next time!

My wife and I had fun up on there, highly recommend going up there. Lots of fun
