Salmon River, Pulaski NY, 11-11 to 11-13

Fished the Salmon River with PhilC from 11-11 to 11-13. Friday was slow, Saturday was a good action day and Sunday was slow. We did manage some good steel on Satuday morning. Got my 2 steelies swinging a streamer, PhilC did well with single eggs. It was a great trip and I'll need to get there again sometime soon.

Jdaddy, pm sent. It doesn't look crowded in the picture but it was fairly crowded. Since there were two of us, one would hold the choice spot while the other either took a break or fished elsewhere. We did stop at some other locations and there were goons galore! Even on Friday. Lower fly zone was jam packed!

Sure looks like Upper Sportsmans. I fished it the last 2 days and netted a 19 pounder for an old feller right where Phil is posing with his!

Sportsman's is the pool right where the trail hits the river up to the riffles. I've always enjoyed that stretch at the top. The funny thing is, as crowded as salmon season is, you can usually find relative solitude right about where you were in pic 3. You can see the crowd and hear all the banter, but not a lot of people stop where you were, yet for some reason in steelhead season, people fish there.

congrats an great report, i am lookin at some land up there pout a lilk cabelas two roomer for base camp.I love fishin there..never get away from the crowds there, if only they would knock the damn down on the oswego an build it say 50 miles upstream you would have two great rivers to fish an thin out the crowds.

I fished the Salmon last Tue, Wed, and Thur. That was my first time and I got into a few salmon and steelhead. I can't wait to go back and explore some of the other spots to fish.

There are places to get away from the crowds on the salmon. Be flexible, and go up with a pile of options for locations, water type, methods, etc. I've had good fishing with nobody in sight multiple times up there. It just took a few years of homework, and knowing a few people that had done the same.

I have to admit that I am torn. I like the idea of catching large Steelies. However, I am deterred by the thought of standing in a stretch of water with 20 other guys. This just seems like all the things I try to escape while fishing.Then again, it could just be my social anxiety kicking in. Either way, it keeps me from making the trip. I like seeing pictures of guys catching these beauties without being surrounded by people. Nice Pics.

Zen you know me and you KNOW I am not going to be involved in such noise. I had the same apprehension. Maybe we can get up there over Christmas break.

Not to hop on the bandwagon but I was hoping to make it up with my dad during my week off as well.

Let me know if anything becomes of the idea. It would be my first time up that way, so it would be cool to fish with someone familiar w/ the area.

bee2, congrats on your 1st steelhead!

You can always find open water during steelhead season, once salmon die off and slow down, you can find openings. You just need to walk little. Get way, find new water.. Most if not all want to stay close to parking area's, those that venture off usually find unmolested fish..

You would think. Just spent the last 3 days there and the river was jammed. The farther we walked the more crowded it got for some reason. It was almost like we walked so far we walked to the next access point, it was frustrating at times. Didn't even go near the fly zones, stayed low and the river was still jammed.
