I was going to go to Erie with some friends, but we changed the plans last minute due to snow.

We headed to the salmon to find the air temps in the single digits and the water at a balmy 33 degrees. Anything below town was slushing non stop, and further below that was locked up, so we fished from the trestle up the whole time.

Started out working from Altmar to the wire hole and got none. My buddy got two with his pin, and the newbies got none. We moved to the trestle to fish until dark, and battled slush and ice bergs for a bit. I went 0/1, and one other came on the pin for the other guys.

Day 2, I started at the schoolhouse and got a small brown. Moved to the trestle and got a nice colored up steelie, but it wasn't on a fly. I switched to an egg sack to compete with the centerpin.

I should add that this is the last steelhead trip that I take without a pin. I'll still fly fish for them (I enjoy it), but my friend catches too many on that damn thing. The pin will always be in my car when I'm in erie or at the salmon... as soon as I can afford one.

The new guys got blanked, but they want to try it again.

Oh, and it was cold.

Jay,

I'm glad your group had some excitement at least.

This is a classic pic...

I hope I can get a copy of the best pic of the weekend...

After we released a fish, my friend put the net down. The frame of the net stood about 2 feet in the air, fully supported by the frozen mesh.

Glad you found some fishable water. Any fish in those conditions is memorable. Also glad you made it back safe!

Looks really cold!!! BUUUUUUUURRRRRRRRRRRRR
