A great trip overall. Some details:
We stayed at the Maple Grove resort in Pulaski, NY (great recommendation giventoflyfish). A good and simple place, nice table to tie on, and okay prices. Got there Monday night, and woke up to a dusting of snow on Tuesday morning. Water temps were around 40 degrees, with outside temps between 30 and 40. Tons of dead / dying / decaying kings everywhere...smelled it as soon as we got on the river. Flows were low (450 cfs I believe).
Fished near Pineville (upstream and downstream) and covered a lot of water. Fished from 7am until 5pm on the first day, and then 8am until noon on the second. First day I hooked 4 and lost 4 (my first day steelhead fishing, alright!). My buddy hooked three and landed 2. Second day I hooked several and landed my first, while my buddy landed two.
Fished standard egg patterns, and swung some streamers. Finally landed a hen on an orange egg. Used 3x and 2x tippet most of the time, with no break-offs. Overall, a great time and a good first Salmon River trip.
