My friend from Maine invited me to join him and some of his friends from Maine and NY to fish the Salmon River and Oswego River. It was my first time for steelies, so I had much to learn about letting them run and pulling them out of the fast waters without breaking the tippet especially when they are fresh out of the water.
I had many steelies hookups, only to see them break off and jump out of the air to flip me off. I landed many good size browns throughout the trip. I did finally land a steelie, see picture. My friend who is an expert fly fishing landed many steelies and had one 25 inch Brown Trout. The other group members managed various browns and steelies.
Weather was great. Cold, sleeting and snowy. Lots of dead and dying King Salmon all over the place.
It's definitely an experience of a lifetime. If you have not gone, try to go. Avoid the weekends though.
For those heading up within the next 2 weeks. Orange Estaz eggs and small yellow with orange dot eggs worked the best for all of us. If you need pattern or location tips, let me know.
