Recent Rain

not that i had any real effect on our weather patterns, but my apologies for hoping we got lots of rain. like the rest of youse, everywhere i fish is totally blown out and will be for some time. for me tho, i won't be spending everyday of the Summer hoping the woods around our home don't ignite. i love fishing, but having a home is more important for me. of all the natural disasters i've prepared myself for in life i really never had a thought about forest fire wiping me off the earth. last year there were out of control fires not all that far from our home and our woods were so dry it would not have taken much to ignite them. there are no fire hydrants where i live and by the time pumper/tank trucks would arrive there wouldn't be much left. i had all sorts of contingency plans with hoses and thoughts of how i could cover my roof so sparks wouldn't land on it and burn it down. it was a stressful time.

so, sorry for reporting on the lack of water and the desire for lots of rain...
People just love to complain on here. Right now I’m looking at central PA and see at least 3 wild trout rivers (not little gemmie ditches either, talking big ones!) I’d feel confident and very comfortable wade fishing for trout at this very moment if I were out there. High water is better than low water 100% of the time- if for no other reason than it keeps the wusses at home.

Take that all you wusses!

I agree that there is lots of fishable water out there. I disagree that high water is better than low water 100% of the time. I really like fishing low water. I like it when I can cast and prospect with a dry fly and fish eat it. That works better in low water.

I'll fly fish in many ways, but getting fish to eat dries is my favorite, especially when they're keyed in on a hatch.

Count me among the wusses. Just wrapped up over a week of consistent rain. I won't be targeting trout for a minute.

I fished a large Central PA stream this evening. It was moving pretty good. I wet waded, really only standing mid calf deep on what is usually dry land. I found lots of fish but only landed one. I was hoping for a streamer bite but had a solitary strike despite spending the vast majority of my time on that tactic. The rest of the contact I made was on dry flies.

It’s better for the fish, which means it’s better.

Flows were perfect in Shenandoah National Park this weekend. Good first backpacking trip of the year!
