Reads Creek, Vernon Co WI, May 13- driftless area.

Checked out this small limestone spring creek today for half a day. Clear blue skies with temps in the 50's to start and rose to 65. Water was clear and looked at average flow.

This stream had easy access and was fishing for smaller Browns and brooks. Had success with sulpher nymphs and grey scuds. Took a couple with Adams dry with sulpher nymph dropper.

Fished through a farm for awhile and also a wooded area of the stream.

Wish I had more time to explore the area.

Didn't really see much for hatching bugs. Didn't see another angler all day. This area is very close to the Kickapoo River.

Fished the driftless for five days last may. Awesome trip! I tried to see if anyone wanted to this year but no takers. Fished Mormom, timber Coulee, spring coulee, bohemian valley, and another 4-5 streams. If anyone is thinking of going, DO IT!

There was an article in Outdoor Life about the driftless areas of the mid-west this month. I am going to hook up here with my relocated buddy living in Duluth and fish this area in the next 5 years. I just gotta stop having kids first and find the time.

Seems like 25 Valley creeks with in a few counties that all have good access. The grass is short because of the cows. Boss- I recalled your trip when visiting the area.

That section of Reads from County Road M downstream is a cow pasture, a relatively new easement (2012, IIRC) and the furthest downstream easement on Reads. The best water on the creek begins about a mile upstream near the junction of US 14/61 and County T. The creek runs through mixed woodlots and abandoned meadows in that section. Reads is a son of a pup to navigate around on up in there, though. If you stay in the creek, its a lot of clay substrate and goop and you usually end up on your can at least once per trip. If you walk the banks, its mostly nettles, grapevines, raspberry brambles and hidden four foot deep sink holes. Lots of fish though...

More like 150 or so. Unless you really love Pennsylvania small stream trout fishing (as I do..) don't go there. It'll ruin you...

Wow, that is a lot of water.

I think I'll be back. It's the closest water to my brother in northern IL and he getting into the sport.

It's a nice area. I enjoyed a nice diner past Black Earth Creek.

Driftless is top 3 on my list. There's something appealing about fishing small intimate spring creeks in farm country.
