Finally got out for a morning on Sunday. Water was still up, cold, and a little off color from last week's rain. I figured a limestoner like the Quitty would be less muddy and I was right. There were just a few other anglers nearby, but none encountered in the two and half hours I fished. It was the start of a sunny day, so glare was a bit of an issue as I nymphed my way upstream. Some midges coming off but no rises encountered. I fished a crane fly imitation as my point fly (I like the mop and so did the trout) with a sexy waltz off the bend of the mop. Immediately landed a fat brown to brush off the skunk on the mop fly. After that fish alternated, what they liked but I had enough action not to switch it up even after losing a few flies to errant backcasts and hooksets.
The water was a little bit higher than perfect for the stretch I was fishing, but that had the fish spaced out nicely. I caught them tight to the bank, in seams below riffles, in pockets of long pools, and anywhere that looked fishy. The cooler water, stronger flow, and some nicer fish led to a few spunky fights. Most fish I hooked very close, which led to a few fish running right at my feet. I hooked two nice browns on back to back casts and ended up with my line around branches above me both times while netting them. No harm done to fish or gear. Overall it was a great morning. Mostly stocked browns, with a couple over 14, a nicely colored wild brown dink, and a pretty stocked rainbow. I attribute the challenges playing fish quickly to rust. Guess I better fish more.
