Pyramid Lake, Nevada-November 6

I fished Pyramid Lake Nevada for about 5 hours on November 6th. Air temperatures varied from the high 30's to the low 50's. The water was very clear and felt to be in the 50's. Winds were variable, but mostly calm. I fished an area called Wino Beach, which drops from about 3 feet deep to 25 feet within 20 feet of the shore line. I set up my step ladder on the shelf and it was underway. I was throwing chironomid nymphs, bait fish patterns, wooly buggers, and beetle patterns. The scenery alone is worth the trip, but if you are fortunate enough to hook one of the lake's monster cutthroat, its once in a lifetime.

I was lucky enough to hook three fish, all on chironmid nymphs. Landed two 6 pounders and lost a 10 pounder. It was a pretty amazing experience and one I would recommend to anyone looking for a unique opportunity and seeking huge trout. The lake has been producing 15 pounders every week. Its home of the World record Cutthroat, which was over 40 lbs. Can't imagine hooking into a monster like that, considering the fight the three fish I hooked gave me.

Wow. Nice report - I've seen it on TV and read about it, but it seemed tough fishing with very long casts, it sounds like you found deep water close in

I'm trying to slip it in to a trip to northern CA wine country and Vegas my wife wants to take - along with a pony trekking fly fishing trip to the high streams.

wow, looks awesome, but having to spend most of my working hours on a stepladder, not sure if I want to fish from one also!! :lol:

We would have had no idea where to fish if it weren't for our guide. According to him, the beach we fished provided the closest access to deep water. There are some areas of the lake, were the shallow shelf extends 100 yards off the shore. Saw very few fisherman other then us. You don't necessarily have to bomb flies to get to the fish. The one you see in the picture hit about 10 feet in front of me. My back hurt after standing on that ladder all day, but it was worth it.

Do they rent ladders or must you bring your own? Wonder if clackacraft makes a high side ladder. :-D

I think the lodge rents ladders. Our guide had some for us. There are youtube videos on how to customize your ladder specifically for Pyramid lake. Some have chair mounted on them.

That would be fun to try....until I fell in which would happen in less than an hour. Pimped out ladder with chair, cooler, camera mount and net holder.

Ive read about this but forget.....why the ladders, is it just to give a better ''view'' at spotting cruising trout ??/

I think it's to allow you to reach further / dealer water. Basically puts you ankle deep in 4' of water. You're then able to access drop off to deeper water and feeding fish. On top of that, it looks pretty cool.

Its two fold. Allows you to cast out further into deep water and keep you up out of the cold water. Krayfish is correct, we were in about a foot and a half of water and casting out into 25-30 feet of water.
