Tried a new spot today that's been on my list. This stream crosses the trail for one of the most hiked mountains in the southern Adirondacks, so I've long wondered if it held fish or if it gets any fishing attention given its small size.
I caught a 3" brookie right at the trail crossing, 15 feet from where tens of thousands of people literally trudge through the stream every year.
Working upstream took me into a super cool small gorge, with 50 foot rock cliffs on either side. It was really beautiful and fun hiking crawling over boulders and downed trees. I had maybe half a dozen good eats. I hooked two 6" fish that were long distance release.
The stream was a little odd in that I found most of the fish down low and then more pools filled with water striders and no fish as I went higher - completely the opposite of what I would expect on a stream of this size. As I hiked back out, though, I noticed that there were a number of feeder springs seeping in down lower as opposed to the rock ledge banks up higher, which maybe means more moderate temps, flows, and fish down low.
Lunker.
Given the fish density and the flow in May, I likely won't be back to fish it. I imagine it's limited by intensely low summer flows. But... Way she goes, boys, way she goes. I just wanted to share because I thought that those pools up against the rock walls were pretty badass.
