Hi All,
Was able to spend a day and a half on the Potomac in MD. The weather went from Sunny and warm Tuesday afternoon to rainy and cool all day Weds.
A few things to note before the specifics:
1. The Potomac has gone catch and relase on all bass from Monacacy river upstream to Dam #2, a pretty long section of the river I will lookinto this more when i get a chance.
2. There are signs up to "not release any flathead catfish" so there must be a problem growing there, we know this story already.
OK Tuesday 8/2 Fort Frederick St Park. Fished from 3:45 til 8:30pm. Caught 2 fish on first 3 cast and had landed 10 by 5:00 all smallmouth and in 8-12 inch range. ended the eve arounf 15-16 smb and a few sunfish. Olive beadhead WB #8 landed most, a few on conehead and marabou muddler. My friend was fishing a beadhead hares ear for sunfish and hooked a 2-3 pound channel cat. when i arrived it was sunny but clouded up by 6:30 or so and fish slowed down.
Weds 8/3 started the morning at Fort Frederick SP in my Kayak, coudy with rain from a drizzle to cats & dogs! 6:45-10:00am
Good action on poppers and Olive WB, another 10 or so smb and 10 sunnys 1 rock bass. Got completly soaked many times over but it felt good. fished again from 12:30-2:30 but just to many downpours to deal with. 4 more SMB Slipped in 2 feet of water and was in up to my neck, but of course was already soaked from rain that had ended 10 min ago. Flyrod OK but lost 2/3 of a good Maduro!!!
Headed down to Harpers Ferry Fished from MD side upstream from Shennandoah confluence 5:30 -7:30. Good action here and a few larger fish 6 fish total 8-14 inches, last fish I hooked may have been 15-16 but it ran in to rocks and threw the hook. Olive WB and poppers were the ticket. Looking forward to hitting this area again with the kayak, anyone interested PM me.
Strange note, tried a chartruse clouser many times size 1 and not even a hit.
