Potomac River, Frederick County, 7/18

The family is out of town and I decided to go smallmouth fishing. I hooked up the trailer and headed for Taylors Landing near Sharpsberg, when I got there the lot was full, no place to park, lots of people on the river Sat. Drove down to Brunswick, put in and went upriver to the rock garden. The water had about 4 feet of visability, lots of grass in the slow areas and the rocks were covered in a slimey algee. I caught about ten small smallies on a foxtail clouser, biggest being about nine inches. Got a few sunfish on a popper and small yellow crystal bugger. On the way home stopped and waded the Monocacy at Rt 550. Very low and clear. Got some very colorfull sunfish in a deadwater, no bass.

Saw a Bald Eagle on the Potomac. very neat.

I was at Bruswick also the same day. Waded downstream on the Virginia side and picked up several lil' guys on my crystal bunner size 4. Algea bloom is in full effect. Directly across from the landing on the Virginia side is a very large hole which averages about 5 feet deep. I saw over 100 carp swimming in there! They didn't like my crystal bunny 🙁 Decided to leave and drove down to Noland's Ferry. I slammed the smallmouth, most about 7-10 inches, a few large ones were caught. All in all I was very pleased with the numbers of lil guys.

On Sunday I fished the Susky around Marysburg and sucked...NADA. Fished the Juniata at Amity Hall...Nada. Went to the mouth of Sherman...1 18incher! 10 hours on the susky and uno smallie, but the fight was worth the price of admission 😀

I think I'm going to focus on smaller streams the rest of the summer. The rivers are too large to cover by foot. Maybe I'll find my elusive 20incher!

midgeman, A Buddy and I were going to come up and fish the Susky yesterday, but it didn't workout. Seems just as well.

I hit the Susky at Marysville tonight. The water is at a nice level but I couldn't buy a strike and the storms drove me off the water before dark so didn't see any white flies. Didn't even see a bass.
Stick to the Potomac - it fishes much better these days.
