Pohopoco creek, Carbon co., 8-10-14

Fished below Beltzville down to water gauge from 5p-8:30p.

Water temps low-mid 60's. Flows were very low in the 40's.

Sporadic risers all day in the slow glassy runs but no obvious bug activity. Got a few hook ups on a small sulphur but didn't land any.

Big trico spinner fall, sulphurs and damsels around 7:45p but surprisingly, not many fish feeding on the surface. I fished the shallow riffles with a caddis/pheasant tail dropper and really started nailing them. Hooked 9 and landed 7 rainbows in about a 30min span until dark. All caught out of the riffles in about 12 inches of water. Fish weren't huge (about 10") but beautifully colored.

I was the only one out there the whole time and it was great.

Water was very low and clear. Sulfurs hatching arnd 5ish and we saw a decent amt rising. Hit another section arnd 7:30 – 8:45 for an iso hatch …... few rising but not as many when the sulfurs hatched. 1st time on time on the Pohopoco and will definitely be back sooner than later … really liked the stream but it needs more rain.

The Po Flow is controlled by a release from the Beltzville dam. Some call it Beltzville damn. 400cfs to 40cfs in a day :roll:

Yea I was fishing with Stag and had not checked flows since the previous day which they were at 100cfs. At least that is what my River App thing on my phone told me. Got to the stream and checked again and couldn't believe they had received so much rain that they had to blow out the lake and now it was back down to 30cfs. Gave it a go anyways. Good hatch of sulphurs, small tan caddis, and a crap ton of isos in the last 20 minutes of light.

Why do they do that? What influences how much they release?

My take....they have no regard whatsoever about how the flows effect the fish or fishing. If the lake rises a bit, they pull the plug. If we get a dry spell they keep it stopped up. IMO, with very little effort and forethought, they can even out the releases to make them less drastic.

Well if thats the case ... who ever "they" are and whateva board it is, we need to recruit and gets Becks in their to shake that place up. Not that I know much but it seems like one of the gems of Nth East Pa
