Time Fished: 630pm - 910pm

Weather Conditions: 80 degrees, Clear turning overcast

Water Conditions: 62 Degrees, 119 cfs, 3ft gage height, Clear water

Insects: Caddis, Sulphurs, Large Craneflies

We had never fished this stream so we just picked between a few well worn parking areas. The section selected was relatively featureless with overhanging brush at the far side bank being the feature that held the most fish. This would change during the spinnerfall when the smaller wild fish showed themselves from bank to bank.

Only a few fish were rising when we first started so I went subsurface and worked downstream while my father and son fished dries upstream. We hoped to figure out where fish were holding by quickly covering the water. I used a bugger, then a March Brown nymph and a prince nymph. Had a few strikes on the bugger, none on the March Brown and caught 1 on the prince. By about 745 enough fish were rising that I switched to a dry. Some sulphurs were hatching so I tried one and there wasn’t much interest in it. I had seen Caddis so I tried one and began to get some takers. Every fish that rose on its own took it and I also brought up others. I landed a rainbow and 2 brown and missed or lost several others. I fished my way back upstream and the wild fish were rising all over in the shallower water. I caught a wild brown and a rainbow the size of a wild fish (6”). Are there wild rainbows here or does the state or a local co-op stock small fish?

When I got up to my son he was quitting after catch 4 Browns. My father quit early thinking there was going to be no spinnerfall and he cut off his fly. Then at 845pm the water was boiling with fish and it was too dark for him to tie his fly back on. My dad estimated 25 were rising where he had quit just 15 minutes earlier. He had hooked 6 fish but didn’t land any.

I used to end up there on my THREE STREAM DAY. Tricos on the monocacy, Henryvills for mini Brookies on mud run then a Platz Burger and a beer and up to finish on the Pohopaco. Fished a 7’ 4 wt imx, a point and shoot rod that could wack a caddies or sulfer under the roadies on the far bank when the sun got off. My wife rescued me from all that.

Sounds like you know it well. Hopefully your wife hasn’t repurposed your 4 wgt as a stake for a tomato plant. If not, there is still hope you can get back there. The place we fished was loaded.

Great report, the pohopoco fishes well most of the year and its a great stream for fishing dries. Let me know next time your in the area if you want company. I fish it often but mostly in the fall. I have had some killer days in October on that stream.
