Pohopoco Carbon County 06-24-2010

Blue go upstream the bugs are fine and the fish are eatin um!
 
In todays Morning Call there was one picture of a 13# Rainbow and another Rainbow that is 15#+ reported to be caught in the Pohopoco Creek.The 15#er is submitted for a state record.
The fingerlings must be growing well LOL!
 
As a member of the LRSA we promote catch and release, but we can not live in everybody's fishing gear and force them to put the fish back that we provide. "I wonder if the metal stringer hanging off the wading belt is standard issue? " If you are so concerned about the way we stock the river I invite you to join our club and come to the meetings, it is only 15 dollars to become a voice in our club and we take everybody's concerns very seriously. To everybody that fish's the PO at the Parryville damn..Where do you think all those fish come from? Thats right the LRSA, other then the fingerlings. WE are the only group that is making a contribution to The Lehigh and we are always looking for people to show up at our meetings and help us with ideas. It is always so easy to be critical of an organization and the way it is run, when you have nothing to do with it. If you do not like us Odd Folk that live above the gap, stay away, stay in Philly area and fish the dead water streams down there. Do not lump a couple of old Anthracite people and every one of us being inbreeding knuckleheads. If it was not for the LRSA the Lehigh River would be a cesspool and as a member of the club I am very proud of the way the Lehigh has been brought back from extinction. So Please if you have concers, come to a meeting and have your voice heard, but do not sit in the shadows and be critical of an organization that gives you a reason to come up to the Gap area from your comfy Philly area lives.

I'll tell you what Lehighregular, instead of putting down the LRSA because of sour grapes maybe you should try working with us a little bit and really making this river better for your club and ours. No wonder whenever I talk to people that know you they say your a Big ***. none of us even think to bad mouth the Cold water alliance but it seems that's all you do to us. GROW UP.

Not going to turn this into a pizzing match and hijack this thread...but, You are right, there are a few things I have not agreed regarding the LRSA policies. As for me being a big Azz...maybe, can't please everyone and don't expect everyone to agree with me.

But I still support the LRSA with membership, my part-time guide service donates extra money each year to the org. I also donate guide trips for raffles. I also use to be the secretary, but had to get out for personal reasons...but i guess that's not enough?

If I don't like something, I'm going to speak up. I think I have that right being a paid member. I think what the LRSA did at the Po was a good function and glad the turnout was good...however, minus the stocking. Maybe some education to anglers about refuge areas would make the Lehigh River a better stream in lieu of stocking fish there to attract more anglers and put more pressure on those fish just trying to survive? Your thoughts???

I am sorry, I was just so steamed reading this thread and seeing all the LRSA bashing, I took a little of it out on you because i have seen a bunch of your posts on other boards and see how you sometimes just seem to throw us under a truck.. once again I am sorry. I will say this once again to everybody else, you have no right to bash the LRSA if you do not become a member and show up to a damn meeting. Thats all Becker out
 
My sample size is exactly two people and I should not infer that the entire LRSA is representative of those couple of folks. I am sorry about that. Being a very active member of Tulpehocken TU, I understand your position of hearing an organization you believe in being disparaged. I do not know enough about the LRSA or their operations to make any educated opinions. The first gentleman I meet over Memorial day was very passionate about the organization and put a bunch of flyers on our vehicle. He did have a metal stringer hanging off his wading belt and thus my assumption that the LRSA was pretty much a put and take organization. The name kind of implies that.
 
You know what jdaddy? you actually made me laugh because I know exactly who you are talking about and a bunch of us give him #OOPS# constantly about his damn stringer. He carries that stringer sometimes because he see's people catch a trout and it is bleeding and they try to revive it in the water and it ends up floating belly up and he grabs them so they do not go to waste. At the meeting on Tuesday he will get an ear full from me about that #OOPS# now.
 
For those that would like to know more about the LRSA they have a good website(s),check it out.They do a great deal of work in improving the Big Lehigh and if the FEW dam people would be more coopertive that river would rival any other in the USA.

No it wouldn't! You'd have about 20miles of decent of trout fishing and that's if you would some how be able to convince ACOE to set the flow at 800min. Where are these fish going to spawn? On the 20ft long boulders? This river will always depend on stocking and there for it will never be world class!
 
I'm no biologist, but I'm pretty sure the way its supposed to work is fish that can't spawn in the river run up the tribs to spawn then drop down to live in the river as will the young when they're big enough to survive it.

And, in an ideally unspoilt-by-man world, the biggest would eventually wind up in the ocean and become sea-run, but no matter how hard anyone tries, I'd say salmon runs in the Lehigh aren't gonna work out. 🙂

On the other hand, if we could somehow get working on that, I'd like to not drive to Pulaski. 😉
 
Yeah wild free ranging fish would love the Lizard, Mahoning and The Aquaschicola! Plus any fish that would stay in the Tribs in the spring over 8in would end up on metal rope!
 
Where did the Salmon enter this?There are no Salmon stocked in the Lehigh.But there are lots of trout stocked there and if the flow of water and temps would be cooler in the summer many more fish would survive and spawn in the tribs as you mentioned.Would it be "World Class'?That's a matter of opinion,but it sure would be a great fishery close to many people.

Salmon entered it when someone made a joke. As is their right.

And no, it almost certainly wouldn't be world class by most peoples' standards. I'd love to see a better fishery there, but world class it ain't. I'm not going to pin that on the corps.
 
I will be heading up to Kresgeville around July 9th( maybe) depends on my health. My wife has their annual family reunion there. When I stay for a couple of days,I usually get to fish the Pohopoco, a couple of times.

In the past I have fished below the Dam, around the Turnpike exit. If I do come up, I'll let you guys know, maybe I could hookup with some of you local guys and we could fish together.

all~ have a few days off next week and am considering a trip up the NE extension to hit this stream - where are the good access points? is there ready parking?
